What Is Kennel Cough?

“Kennel cough” is the common name for either Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis (CIT) or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRD). It, basically, is the dog version of a human cold. It is highly contagious, causes inflammation of the dog’s trachea and bronchial tubes (it’s upper airway), and is found worldwide.

Who is at risk for kennel cough?

Many, different pathogenic organisms can cause “Kennel cough”. Bortdetella bacteria, Para influenza virus, canine adenovirus, mycoplasma, or any other numerous viral or bacterial organisms can cause respiratory symptoms in dogs.

“Kennel cough” is sometimes called “bordetella” because if is often the most common bacterial agent involved. In most cases, more than one pathogen is present. For example, the dog has a virus AND gets exposed to bacteria, such as bordetella.

What does Stonebridge Kennels do to prevent dog illness?

Stonebridge Kennels has a locally unique facility that provides year-round dog boarding, daily dog day care, and full-service grooming.
There are MANY occasions for dogs to have “nose-to-nose” contact here. We believe in, and promote, if appropriate, social interaction between dogs.

While we believe that, generally, this philosophy is best for the health and well being of most dogs, it does present a potentially increased opportunity for illness to spread.

In addition to its vaccination requirements, Stonebridge Kennels has an intensive cleaning and sanitization policy.

Do I Need to Vaccinate for Canine Influenza?

Our first priority is keeping your dog--and every other boarder--safe during their stay with us.  One of the ways we ensure their safety is to insist that every guest have their required vaccinations before they check-in, because in a kennel setting, the health of one dog can affect the health of other dogs.
